Pros

  • OmniWeb featured a dedicated development team.
  • The browser originally included a number of unique features.
  • Only Safari provided a better experience on MacOS over the years.

Cons

  • The development team has abandoned the project, so the browser is outdated.
  • Apple's introduction of Safari and further improvements seriously hurt OmniWeb.
  • A lack of current security updates makes the browser a risky proposition.

OmniWeb is a web browser designed for MacOS, originally released in 1995. Although the browser released decades ago, it's one of the best MacOS browsers. The Omni Group released the browser almost 10 years before Safari was released by Apple. A deep knowledge of MacOS helped the company build a competitive browser. In fact, most users preferred OmniWeb over alternative browsers from Google, Mozilla, and others.

OmniWeb Includes Excellent Features Worth Mentioning

Throughout the years, OmniWeb introduced a variety of excellent features. Workspaces allows users to group together browser tabs into standalone collections. Window form editing gives users the ability to see everything entered into small fields of text. Also, the browser includes ad blocking features and site-specific settings. Web browsing performance is more than adequate during regular use.

A Lack of Ongoing Support And The Safari Problem

OmniWeb comes with two major disadvantages, though. First of all, Apple Safari features even tighter integration within MacOS. Perhaps The Omni Group realized as much since the company ceased active development on the browser over a year ago. The browser remains an excellent alternative to Safari nonetheless. A lack of security updates and active development will make OmniWeb less viable as time goes on.

The Verdict On OmniWeb

In the end, OmniWeb stood atop the standings for best MacOS browser for years. The introduction of Safari put a dent into OmniWeb's popularity, though. It took another decade for The Omni Group to decide to stop development on its browser. While the browser itself remains a high performer, lack of active development makes the browser a nonstarter. Users may want to look elsewhere for a browser on their Macs.
